About the Production

A world premiere musical based on the Oscar Wilde novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, with book by Cristina Pippa and music by Sharon Kenny.

In Vain tells the story of Vivian Wilde, a sheltered daughter of a celebrity actress who disposes of her mother who wouldn't allow her to experience the outside world out of fear it would corrupt her. After having her portrait captured for the first time, a magical force makes it so Vivian appears to remain as young and beautiful as the day her photo was taken, while her visage in her portrait ages and grows more wicked as she descends into additional murder and indulgence.

In Vain was a uniquely collaborative project in terms of projection design, as the work was divided between a class of 8 who each took on specific responsibilities for realizing the complex requirements of this production, which included filming, editing, and building a system which could project live video feeds from phones and cameras held by actors during performance.

My contribution to the projection design team was as one of two lead cue designers, creating the finalized visuals that were seen onstage and programming them with Isadora. This involved mapping to surfaces with complex shapes as well as to two movable panels, and routing projections to multiple projectors.

The photos above all feature cues designed by me; my primary focuses were news report segments, the Wilde estate, and the dance club "The Opium Den." Other locations I designed included a photography studio, jail cell, and birthday party.
